Arizona baseball junior pitcher Mathew Troupe will have Tommy John surgery in the coming days to repair a ligament in his right elbow.

Troupe (0-0) made the announcement Wednesday afternoon through Twitter.

He will miss the remainder of the season and possibly part of the 2015 season.

Troupe first felt the pain in his elbow over the winter break. He went to a doctor near his hometown of Northridge, Calif. where he received an MRI to asses the damage on his URL.

Following the MRI Troupe took five weeks off from throwing. He returned to Arizona in January hoping to make the move from the bullpen to the weekend starting rotation.

But during the middle of last week Troupe’s tenderness returned and informed the coaches.

In the Wildcats’ eight games this season Troupe has made one start and had one relief appearance.

In his one start Troupe pitched just 1.2 innings and gave up six earned runs.

Arizona head coach Andy Lopez said Troupe’s velocity wasn’t the problem but his location was.

For the past two season’s Troupe had been one of the Wildcats’ best closers in school history.

In 2013 Troupe was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List.

After graduating high school Troupe was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the 2011 MLB draft but chose to attend Arizona instead. He is draft eligible this summer, but also said in a tweet that he plans on returning to Tucson next season.

On Tuesday Lopez said freshman Bobby Dolbac will remain as the closer. The starting rotation is still be adjusted.
