Dad finds son after fatal wreck on FM 1960

The father of a driver who died in a traffic crash that also left a passenger dead found his son lying in a nearby wooded area in northeast Harris County early Wednesday morning.

The discovery came after the victim’s car had hit a culvert and a utility pole and then landed on a car trailer.

Bill Gonzales II and Eddie McPayne died in the single-car wreck in the 2200 block of East FM 1960 near Humble about 2:30 a.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Gonzales died at the scene, and McPayne was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hopsital, where he later died. No other injuries were reported.

Deputies said investigators believe Gonzales was the driver of a 1997 Acura 3.5RL that was traveling eastbound on 1960 when the vehicle veered from the road, plowed through a ditch and hit a concrete culvert.

Then the car rolled, went into a nearby parking lot, slammed into a metal pole and became airborne. The car then hit into a utility pole and landed partially on a U-Haul car trailer, deputies said. McPayne was found lying outside the car.

Deputies and members of the Atascocita Fire Department and Atascocita E.M.S. searched the crash site for other possible victims, but found none.

Almost 13 hours after the wreck, Gonzales’ father came to the scene and found his son in a heavily wooded and over grown area nearby, deputies said. Deputies were investigating the wreck.
