The University of Arizona’s volleyball team swept the season series against No. 7 Stanford last weekend for the first time since 2005. A big part of those victories was Kamaile Hiapo, who was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Feb. 8.
Hiapo is receiving this award for the first time in her young career. The sophomore libero averaged 4.00 digs per set against Stanford and achieved a season-best 17 digs against Stanford the second time they played.
“My goals are definitely to get the team to where we need to get some wins, and I feel like the personal achievement will come afterward. It feels really good achieving my own goals through my team,” Hiapo said.
Head coach Dave Rubio reflected back on the recruitment process of the young libero.
“When I first saw her film, I think it was her freshman year that she sent the film,” Rubio said. “I immediately knew that she had the right DNA to become a great player in that position.”
The Wildcats will be traveling to Eugene, Oregon to face the Ducks in a heated Pac-12 match on Friday, Feb. 12, before playing Oregon State on Sunday, Feb. 14, at 12 p.m.
