Colin Darland / Daily Wildcat Arizona Wildcats basketball first half action against the Cal Golden Bears from Haas Pavilion on the Campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

BERKELEY, Calif. — California used a 16-3 run to jump out to a 13-point lead over Arizona but the Wildcats used a 36-12 run of their own and hit 13 of their last 14 shots to take a 45-34 lead into halftime.

Arizona guard Kyle Fogg continued his hot shooting to bail Arizona out of the early hole, hitting all three of his attempts from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the field for 13 first-half points. The senior guard also held California guard Allen Crabbe to six points on 1-of-4 shooting. Freshman Nick Johnson busted out of his recent slump, scoring nine points on 2-of-4 shooting.

California guard Jorge Gutierrez leads the Bears with 10 points but missed time in the first half with foul trouble, and picked up his third foul on a double-foul call with Arizona’s Brendon Lavender with 1:13 to play. Arizona guard Josiah Turner also has three fouls at the half while Fogg and Lavender have two.

California forward Harper Kamp had his way with Arizona early and ended the half with eight points. Angelo Chol helped cool Kamp while the Wildcats went on their run to turn a 13-point deficit into an 11-point lead. Chol also sparked Arizona’s run with a putback layup off of a Jesse Perry missed free throw.

The Wildcats shot 63 percent from the field to Cal’s 45 percent and are being outrebounded 18-12. The Wildcats forced eight turnovers — most of which came during the long run with Gutierrez on the bench — and only committed three of their own.
