    “”Calliope””
    by The Veils

This song first lulls you in with its twangy guitar. The trembling vocals then come in to complement the plunking piano and soft drumming, working perfectly for this band while making their sound that much more their own. While The Veils seem to defy the mundane mentality of having every song sound the same, its music is unified by a European flair. Check the band out at Plush this Friday, and definitely give the rest of its music a listen.

    “”You Remind Me””
    by Steve Poltz

This song lends a sense of familiarity. The quaint strumming alongside Poltz’s soft vocals is quite different from his more humorous songs. It has a lighthearted chorus fitting to this love song’s sound. After Poltz helped co-write Jewels’ “”You Were Meant for Me,”” he broke out and started a solo career. If you enjoy his happy-go-lucky tunes, be sure to catch him at Club Congress on Thursday.

    “”Zoomba””
    by Starlight Mints

Tribal drumming and horns with a Red Hot Chili Peppers sound – that’s something you would only expect from the Starlight Mints. This song is characterized by its infectious beat and unusual lyrics. All the bits and pieces mesh well together to form a cohesive and innovative song. The band’s new album Change Remains, will be released on Tuesday, which, incidentally, is also the day they will be performing at Club Congress.

    “”Autumn Leaf””
    by Adam Franklin

This song is characterized by its warped sound in its vocals and guitars. It’s a little on the slow side, almost gloomy. Franklin, from Swervedriver, is now trying to do his own thing. His latest album Spent Bullets was released earlier this year and he is currently on tour. Franklin will be the solo performer this Friday at the Solar Culture Gallery.
