Around the horn: top five weekend sports stories

• Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike Brown was fired on Friday after a 1-4 start for the team. Former 11-time champion coach Phil Jackson was speculated to step in and return to his former team after retiring at the end of last season, until Mike D’Antoni was hired as the new Lakers head coach Monday

• Former No. 1 Alabama lost to Texas A&M on Saturday, making the championship race all the more exciting. Kansas State and Oregon are now on the track towards the BCS Championship game, with Notre Dame at number 3

• The NCAA has ruled UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad ineligible to play. Athletic director Dan Guerrero believes the decision is “incorrect and unjust to Shabazz.” UCLA will try to challenge the NCAA ruling

• Rome is thinking about bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics after dropping its bid for the 2020 Games for economic reasons

• The Pac-12 and the Washington State athletics department will investigate more into receiver Marquess Wilson’s allegations of abuse from the coaching staff
