With the start of the new school year, I feel it is imperative to remind students and faculty about the importance of being aware of pedestrians and giving them the right of way.

Last Thursday, a co-worker of mine was hit by a car while using a crosswalk on Helen Street near Cherry Avenue. She was not seriously injured, but needless to say she was terrified and is in quite a bit of pain. The student that hit her seemed callous and unapologetic. I’m just assuming this was only one of many similar incidents on campus last week.

New students may not realize how many crosswalks are located on campus, but they should know enough to be aware of people crossing the street. I encourage you to write an article about this issue and remind any people who drive throughout campus how important it is to be aware of pedestrians and cyclists.
