Senate approves club funding, tables proposed bylaw change

The ASUA Senate approved almost $6,000 for club funding last night, an amount that will benefit more than 10 UA clubs.

The African Students Association received more than $1,000 for a cultural show that will introduce others to African culture.

The cultural event will be free and includes a fashion show, performances, poetry, singing and more.

Damascus Road was also allocated more than $1,000 for tables, tents and a beverage dispenser to pass out free water to the UA community.

The club already distributes water around campus but requested extra funding to expand the service.

The Capoeria Club of UA received $829 to help pay for its annual Batizado, a large group event in which new members will be officially baptized into the group. The event can last several days in certain circumstances.

ASUA agreed to fund room rental, advertising in the Arizona Daily Wildcat, printing and facilities management.

A proposed bylaw change that would potentially reverse the bylaw change made earlier in the semester was introduced last night by Senator-elect Dustin Cox.

The change would take away the senate’s privilege of changing consent agenda amounts after sending them back to the Appropriations Board for revision.

Senator Steven Gerner, a political science senior, introduced the bylaw change earlier this semester, which gave the senate this privilege.

Senators debated whether they should make this decision so close to the end of their terms.

“”Our authority is not null and void because our term is coming up in two weeks and I think we have not only the right but the obligation to make these changes,”” said Sen. Shawn Ingram, a finance junior and Appropriations Board member.

Senators voted to table the item until next week, when a final decision will be made.
