Arizona volleyball head coach Dave Rubio explains the next course of action for the Wildcats after a brief pause in the game.

Arizona volleyball dropped another game to No. 20 Utah by a final score of 3-1 in its Pac-12 home opener on Friday night at the McKale Center.

The Utes won the first set by a score of 25-20. Arizona got out to an early 4-2 lead, but Utah hung around until they took a 17-16 lead. The Wildcats kept it close tying the set at 18-18, but Utah was able to take control later on.

Utah took the second set 25-22 after an early 3-1 lead, then Arizona battled back and took a 6-5 lead. It was short-lived however, as Utah came right back and took a 8-7 lead and never looked back. Arizona tried to make another late run, but it was too little too late.

Arizona went on to win the third set by a score of 25-21. Utah took a 4-3 lead early and held it for the majority of the set. Once again, Arizona tried to make a late-set run, and this time they were able to recapture the lead with a signature Elizabeth Shelton kill to make the score 21-20. The Wildcats went on to secure their first set win.

Utah cruised to a 25-13 victory in the fourth and final set. This set was dominated by the Utes as they quickly got out to an 11-2 lead. The Wildcats tried to make it competitive, but every time Arizona scored, Utah had an answer. The Utes tried to stay in the lead throughout the entire set and take home the win.

Devyn Cross and Elizabeth Shelton shared the lead in kills for the Wildcats with 15 each.

“It’s a tough one to lose at home, but we need to keep working and turn it around,” said outside Mackay Sennyey after the game.

Arizona volleyball will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 6 at 12 p.m. against the Colorado Buffaloes at the McKale Center.
