The Arizona volleyball team returns to the McKale Center this weekend with an 8 p.m. game against reigning national champion UCLA. They will take on the No. 6 ranked USC on Sunday for a noon showdown.

“It’s important for us to go out there and compete and just make sure every point counts, and we’ve gotten better at that,” junior setter Chanel Brown said.

As a setter, Brown said she relies on the pass to place the ball and open up spaces for the hitters between blocks.

The Wildcats are currently sixth in the Pac-12 with a 4-8 record after falling to No. 1 Stanford and California in three sets each at away games last weekend.

Stanford, Washington, Oregon and this weekend’s opponents, USC and UCLA, all sit within the top eight in the nation.

“My experience has always been that the older you get, the better you get,” head coach Dave Rubio said. “Even though they’re talented and athletic enough, there’s still a lot of variables when you have a team that’s starting three freshmen and three sophomores.”

Arizona has not had much luck against UCLA all-time. The Bruins lead the series 53-20 despite the Wildcats beating them both times last year.

“We always go into matches thinking we can win one or upset a good team,” sophomore middle blocker Rachel Rhoades said.
