The Arizona women’s golf team finished off 2021 with a promising performance in the Pac-12 preview, but the momentum stopped when the New Years’ ball dropped.
Finishing sixth out of seventh in the “Match in the Desert,” this certainly wasn’t how the Wildcats wanted to start the new year off.
At the end of the second round of the tournament, Arizona shot six over which was a full 24 shots behind the tournament winner and also in-state rival, ASU. The Sun Devils dominated the links by shooting 18 under which was five strokes ahead of second place, Oklahoma State.
Arizona finished only ahead of Kansas, which means the Wildcats finished third out of three Pac-12 teams, the second being UCLA.
Despite being disappointed with the team’s result, Ya Chun Chang continued her strong performances by finishing 10th overall and shooting 1 under through the two days, highlighting her tournament with a team-best 69 on Monday.
Carolina Melgrati is the only other member of the Wildcats to finish in the top 20 by shooting a 145 (1 over).
Head coach Laura Ianello thought the par-4’s were a real detriment to the team on Sunday (Day 1).
“We stringed together a ton of par’s but struggled on a variety of par-4 holes today,” Ianello said. “We will clean up a few things and look to shoot better scores tomorrow.”
The Arizona women’s golf team will look to bounce back at Lamkin Invitational starting on Feb. 14.
