Former UA coach Tomey will retire

Former Arizona head football coach Dick Tomey announced that he will retire from his head coaching position at San Jose State after the 2009 football season, according to the Associated Press.

Tomey, 71, has been a head football coach for 29 seasons. He compiled a 182-143-7 record while coaching at Hawaii, Arizona and San Jose State.

At Arizona, Tomey took the Wildcats to seven bowl appearances from 1987-2000.

This year, Tomey headed his team to a 1-8 record, including a 62-7 loss to Nevada two weekends ago. The Spartans have not won a game since a Sept. 26 win over Cal Poly.
