The Arizona women’s basketball team lost to the California Golden Bears 71-60 in their second of four straight road games. The win for the Golden Bears ended their two game losing streak.
The Wildcats played hard throughout the game, but turnovers and foul trouble cost them the game. Cal was able to score 20 points off of 16 turnovers, and Arizona struggled without Lucia Alonso’s presence at the point after she fouled out. Seniors LaBrittney Jones and Breanna Workman each had four fouls at the end of the game, which hindered Arizona’s defensive strength.
Jones was the best player on the floor for the Wildcats all afternoon. She worked hard on both ends and ended with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Senior Malena Washington led Arizona in scoring for the game with 17 points. She also had four rebounds and four assists.
Washington and Jones are a dynamic duo on the court and provide a huge impact for the Wildcats. However, Cal’s sophomore guard Asha Thomas was unstoppable in the game.
Thomas scored 24 points for Cal. She went 3-5 from the 3-point line and 9-10 at the free throw line. Thomas only committed one turnover herself, which goes to show how much control over the ball she truly has.
The Wildcats hit the road to take on the USC Trojans this Friday, January 27th at 8 p.m. MST.
