The Associated Students of the University of Arizona, UA’s student governing body, discussed Family Weekend, voter registration and new initiatives at their Sept. 26 meeting in the Pima Room of the Student Union Memorial Center.
Voter Registration Drive a Success
ASUA and the Wildcat Events Board hosted a voter registration drive on the UA Mall Sept. 25, featuring food, a mechanical bull and organizations to help register college students to vote.
For Sedona Lynch, senator for the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, the voter registration day was a complete success.
“The event was an awesome, collaborative experience that everyone enjoyed,” Lynch said.
Lynch said she was happy with the large turnout of both volunteers and students registering to vote. In the end, Lynch said she was pleased with the number of new student voices ASUA was able to help empower.
The deadline to register to vote for the November elections in Arizona is Oct. 9. UA students with an Arizona driver’s license can register to vote online.
ASUA Staying Active on Campus
Kate Rosenstengel, ASUA administrative vice president, encouraged the ASUA senators to get involved on campus, especially during major upcoming events like Homecoming and Family Weekend.

“We are in desperate need of Family Weekend volunteers,” Rosenstengel said.
Rosenstengel encourages students to sign up to volunteer for Family Weekend.
For Bennett Adamson, senator for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, staying active on campus means helping to expand the mindset of his fellow students.
“Last Friday, I recorded a podcast for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences,” Adamson said.
The podcast, which will air in the spring, profiled former graduates, discussed the benefits of a degree from SBS and shared insights on how students can impact a technologically changing world.
Inspired by the success of UA’s food bank, Campus Pantry, Katie Christopher, senator for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is working with faculty and administration to start a campus closet to benefit UA students in need.
Club Outreach Continues
ASUA approved the allocation of over $9,000 of funding to campus clubs handed out at the ASUA Appropriations Board’s last meeting.

The funding will help UA’s Mock Trial Club travel to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in a national competition and help send UA’s Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Ambassadors to an international research conference in San Diego, California.
Ashin Katwala, senator for the College of Science, discussed his plans to form a new club on campus to focus on enriching the experiences of computer science students in his college. The club will focus on data sciences and will have something for everyone, according to Katwala.
ASUA will meet again next Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Pima Room of the SUMC, with new topics on the agenda, such as a potential further update on Brennen Feder, the senator for the College of Education and discussions on issues on cultural biases on campus with faculty.
