A rural Edgewood man is in jail and another rural Edgewood man remains hospitalized after a Friday evening stabbing at a home in a rural corner of Fayette County.
Walter L. West, 20, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated battery and aggravated and unlawful use of a weapon. He remained in Fayette County Jail Monday afternoon in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Victim Jared L. Depoister, 26, was taken to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham by private vehicle, police said. Depoister was later transported to Carle Foundation Hospitalin Urbana, where he was in fair condition Monday afternoon.
Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Cory Ristvedt said Monday that police were called to a home in the Laclede area at 6:03 p.m. after a 911 call in which an altercation was reported. Three troopers responded to the scene.
Upon arriving, troopers discovered Depoister had incurred multiple lacerations with a knife and had already been taken to the hospital.
Ristvedt said neither West nor Depoister lived at the residence where the stabbing allegedly occured. He declined to say what kind of knife was used or discuss motive, but he did say state police and the Fayette County State’s Attorney’s office were continuing to investigate.
West is scheduled to appear in court with a private attorney at 9 a.m. April 27.
