The University of Arizona will host a national organization known as the Young Men’s College Conference, which is part of Project Pave the Way. This is the fourth time the UA has hosted the event.
“Each year, we bring students from different Tucson high schools here to campus to introduce them to topics of planning for and preparing for college,” said Early Academic Outreach Assistant Bryant Valencia. “This conference shows the students positive outcomes if you go to college and also focuses on gender identity and masculinity.”
According to Valencia, this year’s conference will feature keynote speaker Kyle “Guante” Tran Myhre, a two-time National Poetry Slam champion, activist and educator. He covers topics such as identity, power and community-building through poetry.

Upon leaving the conference, students will have a better understanding of which classes they need to take, find out about the financial aid process and also understand the importance of making connections in college.
“We are going to provide information about college and provide messages of being critical of how young men find in their identity with their peers,” Valencia said.
The spoken-word set event will be in room 350 of the Modern Languages Building. It begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Project Pave the Way events are made possible through a student services tuition grant to the project.
