Despite early shooting struggles, Arizona took the first half lead on Washington 33-25.
Tempers flared toward the end of the half. Arizona’s Kevin Parrom and 7-foot center Aziz N’Diaye fought for a rebound with just under a minute to go, and after the whistle sounded they both kept fighting for the ball. N’Diaye proceeded to push Parrom into the photographers row down by the sideline. N’Diaye got a technical and Solomon Hill converted two free throws as a result.
Meanwhile, Arizona started out the game aggressive, but not very accurate in hitting just three of its first 15 shots with four turnovers and falling behind by as many as five points.
But, UA point guard Mark Lyons and forward Solomon Hill took over to close out the half and give Arizona the lead.
After the Wildcats jumped out to a short-lived 5-4 lead, Washington went on a 7-1 run and went up 11-6 with 12:46 left.
At the 11:08 mark, the score was 13-8 in Washington’s favor, and then Lyons and Hill combined to score 22 of Arizona’s next 25 points to close out the half. Kaleb Tarczewski had the other three.
Hill’s 14 points were a game-high and Lyons added 12 points. Arizona shot 10-of-28 in the half and 4-of-11, while Washington shot 11-of-31 (percent) and 1-of-3 (percent) from three.
C.J. Wilcox, Washington’s leading scorer, had two early fouls and was held to seven points on 3-of-7 shooting.
The Wildcats had the edge on the boards, outrebounding UW 23-17.
