FINAL: Arizona beats New Mexico State 74-48

Arizona defeated New Mexico State 74-48 tonight in the McKale Center to remain perfect.

Turnovers kept the game close for NMSU early on, but the Wildcats (10-0) used their superior athleticism to outrun, out-shoot and out-defend the Aggies (7-5).

No. 1 Arizona trailed early and took its first lead about seven minutes into the first half. The Aggies would never see the lead again.

Most of the Wildcats’ first half points came in the post, as they attacked the Aggies’ ineffective front line.

Arizona starting center Kaleb Tarczewski was able to keep nimble around NMSU’s nonathletic 7-foot-5, 360-pound Sim Bhullar, who had three points in 27 minutes.

Tarczewski got easy dunks as the Wildcat guards found him in the post. Tarczewski finished the game with 14 points on 5-5 shooting. He was also a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line,

Outhustling the Aggies was the key to Arizona’s second half offensive runs.

Three forced turnovers by the Wildcats defense highlighted a 13-2 scoring run that put the game out of reach by pushing Arizona’s lead to 69-45.

Freshman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was a big part of Arizona’s late run. The sixth man ended with 12 points and eight rebounds off of the bench.

Ashley led the way for Arizona with 15 points. The sophomore was 3-for-3 from long range and also had six rebounds.
