They say cats only live nine lives, but the Koffin Kats plan on having more than that.
The Detroit-based psychobilly trio performed at the Surly Wench Pub Tuesday night, marking the band’s ninth year jamming in Tucson. With music that gives listeners an adrenaline rush, the band put on an exhilarating show.
“Tucson is just a lot of fun,” said Vic Victor, lead vocalist and upright bass player. “It’s always got a place in our heart.”
In January, Koffin Kats dropped their sixth album Our Way & The Highway , a title well suited for a group who practically lives on the road.
I spoke with Victor about the band’s past, present and future:
Koffin Kats? Where did you get that name from?
That name actually came from a buddy of mine, my main tattoo artist. Him and I, this is probably about 10 years ago, were just sitting around in his apartment just coming up with random band names. It was one he came up with. It kinda stuck and I needed a band name not too long after so I was like ‘Hey, I’m gonna use that name you thought of,’ and that’s what we went with.
You know, June 12 got a lot of action when it came to the music scene in Tucson. What made you the best show in town?
We definitely like to have a good time and we like to bring a party to the show.
What is something fans don’t know about Koffin Kats?
Well our drummer, he’s an avid collector of coins. In fact, we just got done listening to one of his coin radio shows. Every week he downloads a coin radio show program and then we have to listen to it when he drives.
So what’s the future looking like?
We will be on tour for the rest of the year. We fly to Finland on the 21st, where we’ll be in Europe for two months. We will be back to Tucson around late October, early November.
