The Associated Students of the University of Arizona discussed funding a Wildcats Event Board event at their senate meeting Wednesday, Oct. 16.

WEB Funding 

WEB, which organizes events for students on campus, requested $5,000 from the ASUA senate budget to help potentially pay for a guest speaker whose name has not been released yet. The event is contingent on whether WEB has enough money in their budget to meet the guest speaker’s rate. 

Senate offered potential solutions to lower costs and reach a wider audience. Allie Schoenike, College of Public Health Senator, suggested relocating to a large venue on campus, such as Centennial Hall. 

“Obviously, it’s amazing and we definitely want a bigger, branded name for admissions reasons for the Wildcat experience and stuff like that, but what’s your reason for wanting to bring a brand name speaker?” Schoenike asked.

WEB said they want to expand the reach of their audience and bring a relevant speaker to younger generations on campus.

ASUA President Sydney Hess thought the event could be a good opportunity for both senate and students.

“We have policy-focused brains, a lot of the time,” Hess said to senate. “We’re thinking about the problems with gen-ed and the problems within UA, but this provides a really cool opportunity to not put out a fire, but actually do something that can provide students with a cool experience they wouldn’t get anywhere else.” 

Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science Update

Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science Senator Adora Harvey gave senate a brief update on the state of her college during her report.

College of Humanities Senator Grace Sluga asked Harvey what her ideal outcome would be for her college in general.

“In my fantasy land, the Undergraduate College would exist, but I’ve heard a lot of mixed messages on that,” Harvey said. 

She also said she wants administrators to be held accountable and encouraged other senators to hold their college’s deans accountable for their actions.

“I think ultimately, the whole goal is to communicate to the provost and other administrators that ‘you made a decision, and it disregarded the student experience completely, and you need to own up to it,'” Harvey said. 

Club Funding 

The appropriations board met Monday, Oct. 14. They allocated $11,082 for funding, leaving appropriations with over $136,000 left in the budget.
