Community members unite to advocate legalization of marijuana

Cars passing by Park Avenue and Broadway Boulevard honked in support of a protest to legalize marijuana on Friday.

Protesters for AZ4NORML gathered on a corner of the intersection and made their way to Cheba Hut while screaming, “Honk if you want it legal!” Signs that read “Marijuana is Medicine,” “No More Drug War” and “We are your neighbors” flashed at those walking by.

The Tucson chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws has organized a march on April 20 for the past seven years to advocate for the legalization of marijuana. About 50 community members joined the march on Friday, each with their own personal beliefs as to why marijuana should be legalized both locally and nationally.

Katherine Dixon was driving to her home in Safford, Ariz., when she saw the protesters walking down Broadway Boulevard. Having just left the Tucson Medical Center after her first chemotherapy, Dixon parked her car and joined the march. She had to start chemotherapy because she got her legal rights to grow her own medicinal marijuana revoked in October.

“I didn’t want to do chemo … I had to try something because they took away what I believe in, my cannabis,” Dixon said.
