Woman in Arlington fire had been fatally stabbed

A 26-year-old woman found by firefighters in the entryway of her burning apartment Sunday had been fatally stabbed, the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office reported Monday evening.

After the fire was out, the firefighters found the body of the woman’s 1-year-old son inside, officials and neighbors said.

The medical examiner identified the woman as Mechelle Gandy and ruled her death a homicide. The child’s name and manner of death had not been released by late Monday.

Arlington police are investigating the deaths as homicides, police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said.

The fire at the Presidents Corner Apartments in the 2200 block of Presidents Corner Drive was called in about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

Firefighters tried to revive Gandy, according to neighbors who saw the fire. She was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m., the medical examiner reported.

The fire appeared to have started in the child’s bedroom, but the investigation was not finished Monday, Assistant Fire Chief Alan Kassen said.

Two other apartments were damaged, he said.

A woman moving her belongings from one of those units Monday said that a friend who was grilling Sunday night started to smell something that was more like burning plastic than burning charcoal. The man looked around and saw smoke coming from Gandy’s downstairs unit, said the woman, who asked not to be identified because of the ongoing investigation.

“”He called 911 while I went upstairs and knocked on some doors to let people know they needed to get out,”” she said.

Gandy had lived in the complex for less than three months, said Perry Webster, who lives in a nearby unit. He said she was a quiet but friendly woman who smiled at neighbors and spoke while coming and going.
