    Men’s golf in third at Omni tourney

    After the first day of play, the No. 38 Arizona men’s golf team is in third place at the National Invitational Tournament at Omni Tucson National Golf Course.

    The Wildcats shot a first-day round of 7-under-par, 278, trailing No. 5 UCLA’s 11-under-par score and No. 9 ASU’s 10-under-par.

    Day one’s highest-finishing Wildcats were juniors Josh Esler and Nathan Tyler, who each shot a 3-under-par, for a 69 in the first round. Both are tied for eighth place.

    Redshirt sophomore Billy Whalen, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 17th place with a round of two-under-par for a day one score of 70. Sophomore Trey Denton and freshman Nick Park are both tied for 20th place with one-under-par, for a 71 round for the first day.

    Junior Josh Wilks, also competing as an individual, is tied for 20th place, while junior Henry Liaw is tied for 30th place after day one with a round of an even par 72. Sophomore Travis Esway and junior Brian Prouty are both tied for 39th place with 1-over-par rounds of 73.

    The Arizona ‘B’ team is in 13th place with a score of five-over-par for a score of 293.

    The National Invitational continues through tomorrow.
