FINAL: Arizona baseball drops first game of season against Rice

Arizona (5-1) dropped its first game of the season to Rice 8-5 during the first game of a three-game series at Hi Corbett Field.



Starting pitcher Austin Schnabel allowed 13 hits and eight runs and had four strikeouts on the game. Schnabel went 7 ⅔ innings and threw 99 pitches.

Cameron Ming game in during the eighth inning and pitched the final 1 ⅓ innings of the defeat.

Scott Kingery and Riley Moore led Arizona’s offense, combining for six hits, with each going 3-for-4.

Rice outhit Arizona 14-9 and had six players with at least one RBI.

The Owls went through four pitchers during the game, including Kevin McCanna, Austin Solecitto, Austin Orewiller and Matt Ditman. McCanna started for Rice and went six innings with three strikeouts and three walks. 

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday at Hi Corbett Field.

Notable plays:

– Arizona’s Scott Kingery hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning allowing Jared Olivda to score.

– Arizona’s Riley Moore hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
– In the bottom of the seventh, Kingery singled to left field driving Oliva into home.

– Arizona comes back in the bottom of the eighth and Oliva’s singled through the left-field side and Dalbec scored.
