UA golfer Ben Fox lost in dramatic fashion in the first round of the 2006 U.S. Amateur Championship in Chaska, Minn., yesterday.
Down by three shots with just four holes left to play, the sophomore stammered back to tie Ryan Posey of Dallas, Texas, in the match-play event. It took three more holes, but Fox finally fell on the 21st hole, losing to Posey 1-up.
Meanwhile, senior Josh Esler was bounced out in the first round as well, 3 and 1, to Mark Strickland of Woodstock, Ga. Strickland made a par-4 on the second hole and never looked back, as Esler won just three holes on the day.
Both players qualified for match play after 36 holes of individual scoring.
A record four Arizona golfers, including senior Brian Prouty and sophomore Tyler Neal, made the event, which runs through Sunday.
