    Soccer argument persuasive

What a great article you wrote, Andrew (Andrew Austin’s “”If you build it, they will come,”” August 1). Soccer is such a powerful force in the world. We can balance traditional American sports with a dose of refreshing innovation like a pro soccer team in Tucson. You would have at least 30,000 people each week.

I hope it can come true someday. I would be the first one to go.

    Gay ‘Sparky’ reference insensitive

As a former UA student and a die-hard UA fan, I enjoyed reading your article (Tom Knauer’s “”A few reasons to hate ASU athletics,”” July 25) on the shortfalls of the Arizona State athletic program from top to bottom, past and present.

However, I found the comparison to ASU’s “”Sparky”” to a “”gay dog”” callow, harmful, hateful and irresponsible. With or without intention you have implied everyone should hate gay people and that homosexuals are inferior to heterosexuals. Choose your words wisely. Your column was great besides those comments.

Hate speech is inexcusable unless it’s directed at Barry Bonds.
