TEMPE, ARIZ. — Below are the seven most important stats from Arizona men’s basketball’s win over ASU on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Deandre Ayton, the possible No. 1 overall NBA draft pick this summer, notched a team-high 25 points in the win, showcasing his ability to score from jumpers, put-back layups and thunderous dunks. Ayton also pulled down 16 rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked four shots. The 7-foot-1 freshman was the difference for Arizona. 

“After competing against him twice I think he may be the best big I’ve seen in college as a player or coach,” ASU head coach Bobby Hurley said. “He’s just scratching the surface of what he’ll be in the future.”

The Wildcats took command of the game early on, scoring at will during the first 10 minutes of the first half. Arizona’s initial dominance opened up an 18-point lead at the 7:33 mark of the first half. However, ASU would have an answer.

While trailing 33-15 in the first half, Bobby Hurley’s squad suddenly caught fire and proceeded to go on a scoring outburst of remarkable proportions. ASU, led by guards Kodi Justice and Tra Holder, went on a 31-6 run between 7:33 mark of the first half all the way until the 17:14 mark of the second half. 

Fueled by a sold-out Wells Fargo Arena, the Sun Devils took a 46-39 lead over the Wildcats and had UA on its heels.

Right when things could have spiralled out of control for Arizona, the ‘Cats found a way to claw back. After a UA cheerleader got thrown out for “excessive use of the megaphone” while an ASU player was shooting free-throws, the Wildcats ended the half on a 30-20 run over the final 11:53 of the game. 

28 percent

ASU, regarded as one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the conference, managed to hit 7-25 of its 3’s on the night for a shooting percentage of 28 percent. Guards Tra Holder, Shannon Evans and Remy Martin went a combined 3-15 from deep.

Even though it certainly didn’t feel like it, Arizona had a lead for 30:03 of the game. It wasn’t until early in the second half that ASU went ahead before the ‘Cats eventually answered back.

The Wildcats come down with 44 total rebounds on the night compared to just 28 from the Sun Devils. 30 of them came on the defensive end and the other 14 on the offensive end allowed UA to have 14 second chance points and 30 points total in the paint.
