Officers from the University of Arizona Police Department were called to the scene of a car accident between two UA students on Sept. 18, after one of the student left without waiting for officers to arrive.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., a student attempted to back out of his parking space when he was struck by another vehicle.

The man had seen lights from another car, and honked to warn the vehicle he was backing out. However, loud music was coming from the vehicle and the woman driver did not appear to hear the honk. The man’s rear passenger bumper was hit by the other car.

While exchanging insurance information, the woman who had hit the man’s vehicle became angry.

As the man started to call UAPD to report the accident, the woman grabbed all her information from his hands, got into her vehicle and left the scene.

Roughly 10 minutes after police arrived and began talking to the man, the woman drove up in her vehicle.

When speaking to police, the woman said she was backing up so she could let a different driver out of a space. While she was backing up, the man’s vehicle hit her car.

The woman said she gave the man plenty of time to take down her information, and even though she knew the police were on their way, had to leave to get to her study group on time.

Photographs were taken of the accident as evidence. No charges were pressed against the woman for leaving the scene of an accident.

Daddy issues

On Sept. 18 at 9:30 p.m., a non UA-affiliated man was cautioned for having drug paraphernalia on campus, and a UA student was given a code of conduct violation for the use of marijuana.

Around 8:55 p.m., a UAPD officer pulled a pickup truck over for driving without headlights around campus. As the officer walked up to the vehicle and spoke to the man driving, he smelled marijuana coming from the truck.

The man in the truck said he did not have any marijuana at the time but admitted to having it roughly 10 minutes before the police pulled him over.

He then showed the officer his medical marijuana card and said he had tossed out the marijuana earlier because he was picking up his dad later and his dad didn’t like marijuana.

He admitted to having the marijuana because he was smoking with his friend, a UA student, whom he had just dropped off at a residence hall.

As the officer waited for another UAPD officer to help him search the vehicle for marijuana, the officer told the driver that although it was OK for him to have marijuana because of his card, it was illegal to have marijuana on UA property.

The assisting UAPD officer arrived, searched the vehicle, and found nothing. She went to find the student who had been dropped off.

The driver’s medical marijuana card was put under review and a code of conduct violation was sent to the Dean of Students Office for the UA student.

No sleep tonight

A non UA-affiliated man was arrested on campus by UAPD officers for multiple outstanding warrants from the Tucson Police Department on Sept. 18.

At 11:37 p.m., officers were called to address a homeless man who was asleep on the front lawn of a UA sports arena.

When officers spoke to the man and checked his identity, they discovered the man had six outstanding warrants from TPD and multiple run-ins with UAPD officers for sleeping on campus and harassing members of UA faculty.

The man said he had been sleeping on campus for a while even though he knew he shouldn’t be there.

At 11:52 p.m., the man was arrested and taken to Pima County Jail where he was booked. He was also given a six-month exclusionary order by UAPD.
