Art Students Denied Classes Due To Manpower Shortage

Four hundred University students in the college of Fine Arts were unable to get into classes in that college during registration due to equipment, manpower and facilities shortages, according to college dean Robert L. Hull.

Another 320 were allowed in by the addition of sections other than those originally listed in the Schedule of Hours, Hull said.

HULL SAID most of the students turned away were attempting to get into art courses, although some were from the music department.

“”We don’t have the flexibility in the budget which is needed.,”” Hull said. “”The budget is locked a year ahead of time and cannot compensate for such increases.””

“” In great part of the legislature is just not giving us the money to keep up with the rise in student numbers,”” he says. “”The difference between the increase asked for and the cuts in the budget has been more than we could absorb.””

“”IT IS impossible to predict the number of students who will change their majors between years,”” Hull said. “” I think there has been a general shift within the University population, with part of the shift coming toward Fine Arts.””

Hull added that “” the shift does affect other areas of the University, and I’m sure we are not the only people with the budget problems.””

Hull estimated that half of the 400 people turned away were majors in the departments in which they attempted to get courses.
