Arizona wins close matchup against Kansas State 72-68

No. 3 Arizona men’s basketball survived a scare from Kansas State to win 72-68 in the EA Sports Maui Invitational semifinal. The UA (5-0) led for most of the second half, as they shot 63.2 percent but couldn’t pull away from K-State. Arizona made six free throws in the final 2:31 to move on.

UA center Kaleb Tarczewski tied his career-high and set his season-high with 18 points and three rebounds. Guard Gabe York had 15 points.

Freshman forward Stanley Johnson had 14 points and seven rebounds despite missing most of the second half with four fouls.

UA starting power forward Brandon Ashley had 10 points and five rebounds. Point guard T.J. McConnell has seven points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Arizona shot 53 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 71 percent from the line. KSU shot 45 percent, 58 percent from beyond the arc and 71 percent on free throws.

Kansas State guard Marcus Foster led KSU with a game-high 23 points

Arizona plays in the championship game at 8 p.m. on Wednesday on ESPN.
