The Arizona men’s golf team currently sits in fifth place at the Arizona Invitational after the second round was suspended due to darkness.
Players will finish the last three holes of the second round today at Arizona National Golf Club, with the final round beginning immediately after.
“”We’re not out of the tournament; I think we’re in the mix,”” said assistant coach Andy Barnes. “”We expect to go out and compete to the end (today).
“”You have to go out and make birdies and hopefully somebody will take charge and bring us home,”” Barnes added. “”But it takes everybody to contribute, and it doesn’t just take one guy.””
The Wildcats finished the first round with an 8-over-par 292. Arizona was led by Rich Saferian, who is tied for sixth place after shooting a 2-under-par in the first round.
Zack Byrd of Coastal Carolina is the current leader, after shooting an 8-under in the first round.
“”He had two bad holes in the morning, so he kind of got off to a rough start in the morning, but he was able to birdie the last three holes to salvage a 1-over-par 72, which is respectable,”” Barnes said of Saferian. “”He’s playing solid, he’s probably made the least amount of mistakes out of the whole team.””
Tom Conran sits tied for 37th after finishing the first round at 5 over, and Nick Park is tied for 44th after hitting 6-over-par to round out the top 50.
“”We didn’t play the par 5s well in the morning, which kind of killed us,”” Barnes said.
Pepperdine leads team standings with a 2-under while Tennessee is in second place at even par.
