Arizona volleyball defeated by Washington, adds to second straight Pac-12 loss

UA’s Jaelyn Hodges (11) jumps to spike the ball in the Wildcats game against Washington at McKale on Oct. 8. Washington State took home a win with a score of three sets to one. 

Following the loss to Stanford, the Arizona volleyball team dropped another one at home against Washington 1-3. The Wildcats’ hitting percentage on the night was .160 percent while the Huskies’ hit .203 percent. The four-set match resulted in scores of 26-24, 23-25, 19-25 and 23-25.

Set 1 – (26-24)

Arizona won the first set and the Wildcats’ hitting percentage was .195 percent while the Huskies’ were .136 percent. Outside hitter Jaelyn Hodge got Arizona going with a kill and was assisted on the play by setter Emery Herman. Arizona trailed early 10-2 but fought back behind Hodge’s four kills and outside hitter Sofia Maldonado Diaz’s three kills. Arizona finished the set due to a kill by opposite Puk Stubbe and she was assisted by Herman.

Set 2 – ( 23-25)

Washington won the second set and in the second set, the Wildcats’ hitting percentage was .095 percent while the Huskies’ was .136 percent. Arizona’s offense came from five kills from Stubbe in the second set. At the beginning of the set Arizona got their first points behind a kill from Maldonado Diaz and was assisted by Herman. This set was competitive throughout, the set was tied 23-23 and the Huskies scored the last two points to win the match. 

Set 3 – (19-25)

Washington won the third set and Arizona’s hitting percentage was .059 percent while the Huskies’ was .256 percent. To start the third set Stubbe got Arizona started with a kill but Washington controlled the set throughout. Stubbe added two kills bringing her total to nine kills in the match and Maldonado Diaz added four kills bringing her total to 10.

Set 4 – (23-25)

Washington won the fourth and final set, in which Arizona’s hitting percentage was .303 percent while Washington’s hitting percentage was .323. To start the fourth set Hodge got Arizona started with a kill and was assisted by Herman. The offense by the Wildcats in the fourth set came from Maldonado Diaz with six kills bringing her total to 16 in the match. This set was back and forth but in the end, Washington won the set. 

Arizona’s next game is at home on Sunday, Oct. 10 at noon in McKale Center.
