The Arizona men’s basketball program officially hired former University of Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar as an assistant on Saturday. He will replace former assistant Joe Pasternack.

Romar spent 15 years as head coach for the Huskies amassing an overall record of 298-195 and he was 143-127 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Official statement from Arizona head coach Sean Miller:

“It’s an exciting day for Arizona Basketball to be able to welcome Lorenzo Romar and his family to our basketball family,” Miller said. “Lorenzo’s accomplishments in this game speak for themselves, including his successful tenure as the head coach at Washington for the last 15 seasons. However, his dedication to his players, passion for this game and impeccable character is what everybody that knows him loves about him. He will no doubt make a significant impact in all aspects of our basketball program as we continue to build and improve in all that we do.”

He is known as a recruiter with a knack for bringing in blue chip prospects. Romar recruited and coached projected top-5 pick Markelle Fultz this season and had this year’s top recruit, Michael Porter Jr., committed to play for the Huskies before his departure.

The Wildcats are still pursuing multiple top-rated recruits who have yet to declare and Romar could help play a part in Arizona bolstering its already deep 2017 class.
