The Center for Creative Photography at UA is recognized as one of the world’s finest study centers for the history of photography, according to its website, but the museum is also home to several events featuring different collections this spring semester.
The events and programs range from film screenings to lectures to a birthday celebration, and they all relate to current exhibitions on display. The exhibition, “Richard Avedon: Relationships,” is a portrait series that explores Avedon’s perspective on the relationships he’s had in his life. The next featured exhibition will be Ansel Adams’ “Examples,” beginning on Feb. 23.
The events are open to the public, but there are also special events for members only. UA students, however, get a free membership.

Rebecca Senf, the center’s chief curator, decides what exhibitions will be featured and also helps pick relevant events. The purpose, she said, is to provide additional ways for people to learn about photography and connect further to the material.
“As a research center in photography, we are connected to what is happening in the field, and we can bring the best and most exciting speakers, films and publications to the attention of our audience,” Senf said. “We want these experiences to encourage people’s curiosity, excite them about photography, link them more closely to the Center for Creative Photography and spark questions through lively dialogue.”
Below are the highlighted events and programs for Spring 2019:
Lynn Estomin’s “Patrick Nagatani: Living in the Story”
Filmmaker Lynn Estomin is screening her documentary on Japanese-American photographer Patrick Nagatani on Friday, Feb. 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The film details Nagatani’s process as an artist as well as social issues that he faced throughout his life.
In Conversation with Ralph Gibson
Ralph Gibson, a New York-based surrealist photographer, will be giving a lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Gibson has won multiple awards for his work, including the Lucie Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2008. He is also a musician and will be performing guitar on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in Crowder Hall.
Ansel Adams Birthday Celebration
Over the course of two days, the CCP will be holding their annual Ansel Adams birthday celebration. The event kicks off with an evening preview on Friday, Feb. 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
The main celebration is a free, public event on Saturday, Feb. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. Mark Burns, a landscape photographer, will be speaking about Adams’ work with the national parks. There will also be a variety of family friendly activities for attendees to enjoy and, of course, birthday cake.
An Evening with Paul Roth
Art historian and scholar Paul Roth will be speaking Thursday, Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Roth was the director of the Avedon Foundation and will be discussing Avedon’s work as an extension to the exhibition.

An Evening with Larry Fink
Photographer Larry Fink will be discussing his work on Thursday, March 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Fink is most known for taking photographs of people at social events.
Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
The second Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon will be held Friday, March 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal for this event is to encourage more women to contribute to Wikipedia articles, especially those on women photographers, who are inadequately represented. All are welcome to participate, and editing assistance, along with refreshments, will be provided.
An Evening of Fashion with Phoenix Art Museum Curator Dennita Sewell
Dennita Sewell, the Jacquie Dorrance curator of fashion design for the Phoenix Art Museum, will be giving a speech about the relationship of photography and fashion on Thursday, April 18. The CCP holds a variety of fashion photography and is one of the few places that collect it for academic purposes. The event may include a fashion show, but the final details are still being sorted out.
