Arizona’s No. 1 player continually finds a way to win. Senior Roger Matalonga’s efforts were recognized when the Pacific 10 conference rewarded him as the men’s tennis Player of the Week.
“”It gives confidence to me and the team for the rest of the season,”” Matalonga said.
After a hard fight on Friday against University of California – Santa Barbara in singles play where he had to beat 11 match points, Matalonga, who’s ranked No.18 in singles, followed up with another win against Pacific on Sunday.
The wins were big for the Wildcats (4-0) and proved to be big for Matalonga as well.
This is the first time that Matalonga has received this award.
“”It’s special to me because I’ve been here three years and I didn’t even know they gave it for tennis,”” Matalonga said.
“”I am more excited to practice and see the guys.””
The award shows No. 55 Arizona to be one of the rising programs in college tennis.
“”We’re improving little by little and are playing much better,”” he said.
