In the middle of scorching heat, Arizona basketball continues to draw headlines. Head coach Sean Miller has been elected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches board of directors.
“It’s a great honor for me,” Miller said. “I’m really excited about it and in particular to be a part of that board alongside some of the coaches that are already there and done so much for the game.”
According to the NABC website, nearly 5,000 basketball coaches of all levels of competition from high school to NCAA Division I comprise the NABC.
FIBA U18 Championship
In addition to being elected to the NABC, Miller will also serve as an assistant coach for the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team this summer.
“When this came across as an opportunity, really a number of things made a lot of sense,” Miller said. “As a coach you have an opportunity to get better… having an opportunity to coach some of our young players in this country who will go on to do great things, allows you as a coach to improve.”
The team will train and compete in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Miller will travel with the team when they train in Colorado from June 10-19 and the event itself will run from June 20-24.
NBA Draft talk
Former Arizona basketball players Nick Johnson and Aaron Gordon are preparing for the 2014 NBA Draft by working out for NBA teams.
Gordon, a projected lottery pick, is scheduled to work out for the Los Angeles Lakers tomorrow and Johnson, a projected second-rounder, has worked out with the Toronto Raptors.
Both players have to wait until June 26 to hear their names called.
Summer Basketball
When most students are enjoying their summer vacation, members of the Arizona basketball team are taking classes.
Returnees Gabe York and T.J. McConnell are currently enrolled in classes while incoming freshmen Craig Victor and Parker Jackson-Cartwright will arrive shortly to do the same.
According to Miller, the full team will be back on campus for the summer two session of summer classes.
“In summer two, which begins in July and goes to mid-August, our entire team will be here.” Miller said.
