Arizona volleyball fell to Kansas State Friday night in the first round of the Wahine Invitational taking place in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Arizona put up a fight losing three games to one, and saw great production from its team leaders.

Mau led the way with her 12th career double-double. Her 19 kills were a match-high and one shy of her ninth career 20-kill match.

Seniors Kalei Mau (19 kills, 10 digs), Penina Snuka (32 assists, 7 digs) and Laura Larson (13 digs) gave a great effort in the first contest of the season.

Sophomore Tyler Spriggs did not have the kind of stats the team is used to with 3 kills and 7 digs and will have to contribute more if Arizona wants to compete against the elite competition they are facing this weekend.

After the match, Head Coach David Rubio shared his thoughts on the loss.

“We lost this match in serve and pass,” said Rubio. “Too many serving errors, too many receiving errors — they were better than we were tonight.”

The first game had a final score of 25-21 with Kansas taking the early lead. They responded by winning the second game as well by the score of 25-16.

Arizona finally got on the board by winning the third game 25-20, but it was not easy. There were four lead changes and four ties in that set.

Kansas closed the show in fashion winning the fourth and final game 25-18. Kansas St. finished the match with leads in serve aces and blocks, while Arizona held the advantage in attacks and kills.

The Wahine Invitational features some of the best volleyball programs in the country so the competition will only get tougher for Arizona.

The Wildcats will face fourth ranked Wisconsin Saturday and the Badgers return 12 letter winners coming off a 26-7 record in the 2015 season.

Arizona will play against sixth ranked Hawaii on Sunday, who won the Big West Conference title in 2015.
