The Arizona Wildcats kept their momentum rolling against the Idaho Vandals with its dominant 96-42 win on Dec. 23. The Wildcats had this game wrapped up in the first half as the score was 54-20 heading into the locker room. 

The Wildcats were led by Shaina Pellington’s 16 points on 8-12 shooting from the field but it was Arizona’s bench that did most of the scoring, putting up 58 of the total 96 points scored for the Wildcats. 

“We have never had 58 bench points in all the years I have been here,” Arizona Wildcats women’s basketball head coach Adia Barnes said.

The Wildcats also dominated on the boards and outrebounded Idaho 54 to 28 with freshman Lauren Ware grabbing 13 of those rebounds. Ware recorded her second double-double in her young-career with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

“We are actually making an effort to do it and we did a really good job at it,” Barnes said. “I’m proud of our attention to detail.”

Idaho came out in a zone defense and stayed in it for the entire game. Arizona was able to dissect the defense and put the ball wherever they wanted on the court, making swing passes to the opposite corner and the weak side flash to the low post. 

“I’m proud of the way we shared the ball, the way we looked for each other, the way we didn’t rush into any shots,” Barnes said.

Arizona’s press worked magically for the Wildcats, giving them a lot of extra possessions as they forced 16 turnovers to get them an extra 22 points.

The Wildcats go into the Christmas break with a 7-0 record and will start off the new year hosting the No. 1 team in the nation, Stanford.
