Arizona’s Cal Stevenson (8) makes it to first base in the nick of time during the UA-Bryant game on Sunday, Feb. 18 in Hi-Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz.

The Arizona baseball team swept the Bryant Bulldogs at home over the weekend capping off a perfect 3-0 start to the 2018 season.

After being rained out on their scheduled home opener, the ‘Cats managed to sweep Bryant by winning the double-header on Saturday and finishing off the Bulldogs 10-1 at Hi Corbett Field on Sunday afternoon.

Junior college transfer Avery Weems managed to pitch a solid 5 2/3 innings in his Arizona debut while allowing one run off six hits and giving up two walks and striking out three off a total of 75 pitches.

The Wildcats got off to a fast start scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning after senior Cal Stevenson led the inning off with a single and crossed the plate after junior Alfonso Rivas popped a sacrifice fly to left field giving the Wildcats a quick 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Cameron Cannon’s single to left allowed Mitchell Morimoto to score giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead followed by Cesar Salazar’s single to right field giving Arizona a 3-0 lead.

Arizona kept the run support coming for Weems as they added one more run to the scoreboard off Cesar Salazar’s bases loaded sacrifice fly that ended up scoring Rivas giving the ‘Cats a 4-1 lead. The Wildcats managed to score six more runs through out the ball game finishing off the Bulldogs 10-1.

The Wildcats look to take their 3-0 record on the road to San Diego, Calif, as they will encounter games against the Arkansas Razorbacks followed by three games against the SDSU Aztecs, Michigan Wolverines and UCSD Toreros in the Tony Gwynn Classic.

Arizona will be back at home on Feb. 27, when they go up against the Aggies of New Mexico State at 6 p.m.
