You may not like sports. You might think it’s a testosterone-riddled obsession, stereotypically for those too dumb to grasp fine art or quadratic equations.

Let me try to win you over by pointing out something people often overlook.

Athletics aren’t just for so-called fans.

My goals for this semester include satisfying that Arizona Cardinals superfan who began taking antidepressants after his team lost the Super Bowl, but also his girlfriend, who had a hard time giving a hoot about the loss and failed to understand her partner’s plight.

The point is that sports uncover human nature.

The physical pain, the mental instability, and the power of love and hard work are not solely rooted in athletics, but in every single thing humans do.

Artists, mathematicians and writers love UA sports, because they maintain a sense of community through the epitome of being a human being.

Athletes’ passions — ones that resemble students’ passions — are out in the open. Just as a football player will spend countless hours in the weight room so he can drag the pile that extra yard, an aspiring physicist will put in countless hours in the classroom to become the best he can be.

Those similar qualities bind our university.

I hope to make everyone feel the emotion of a buzzer-beating loss or a last-second win, and of course, give you the sports news you desire.

But I also want you to see people being, well, people.

I want you to pick up the paper and read about someone doing what they love through life’s pressures that you and I feel every single day.

That being said, my vision is your vision.

In a new era of journalism, reader interaction is imperative to our success.

We want to hear your opinions on who should really be the starting quarterback and why you think a certain team is struggling — even writing us to announce your disgust for Mike Stoops‘ visor is welcome.

If you like something we do, write or e-mail us. If you dislike something, do the same. Criticisms make us better.

The Daily Wildcat is not our paper, nor is it the paper of the athletes.

It is your paper.
