“Man confesses to killing 1, wounding 1”

Pavonia Street man arrested Friday night in connection with a double shooting on the West Side has confessed, police said Saturday.

Pedro E. Ramos, 30, also known as Pedro Roman, has been charged with second- degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Ramos opened fire on two men in front of a house on Virginia Street near West Avenue shortly before 10 p. m. Friday, police said.

The victims’ identities were not immediately released.

One victim, identified only as a 34- year-old man, was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

The second, a 46-year-old man, was shot in the face. He was listed in stable condition at Erie County Medical Center Saturday afternoon, police said.

At a news conference held in front of the bullet-riddled front door of the Virginia Street house Saturday, Mayor Byron W. Brown and Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda credited the arrest to the swift actions of two police officers who were in the area patrolling.

Derenda said Officer Scott Blessy saw a car racing away from the shooting scene and radioed a description.

Officer Joseph Ruggiero then spotted the vehicle downtown and pursued it. Three men, including Ramos, were seen leaving the car near the Marine Drive Apartments, where they were arrested.

Derenda said the murder weapon, a handgun, was recovered during the arrest. He also said Ramos confessed.

Derenda would not say what sparked the shooting, only that there was a “”minor dispute”” before the shots rang out.

Asked if it was gang-and drug-related, he quipped, “”it was related to stupidity.””

The officials pointed out that the homicide was the seventh this year, although it was the second this week. They also said four out of the seven homicides this year have been solved.

“”These kinds of crimes are not going to be taken lightly,”” Brown told reporters.
