The University of Utah gave the University of Arizona volleyball team its third loss of the season, defeating them in straight sets by the scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 30-28. The Wildcats appeared to be missing something the entire night as they fell to the Utes.
Set 1 (25-19)
The first set was not as close as it seemed. Arizona opened the set with an attack error and Utah responded with a kill by Madelyn Robinson. Arizona gave Utah 9 points simply from errors, and Utah used this to their advantage as their leader in kills for the match, Robinson, scored six kills of her own to lead Utah to a first-set victory.
Set 2 (26-24)
The second set was much more competitive than the first, but it started off sloppy for both teams as they each benefited from early errors by each other. Then it turned into a back-and-forth battle. As both sides traded kills and errors, eventually the Utes pulled away due to more errors by Arizona. However, late in the match, Puk Stubbe and Sofia Maldonado Diaz were able to deliver back-to-back kills and the Wildcats tied the set at 24-24. Utah then made a crucial substitution, bringing back Robinson who would close out the set for Utah with a decisive strike.
Set 3 (30-28)
The third set began with both teams trading kills back and forth, until Arizona went on a 5-point run. This was by far the best Arizona looked all day, but the Utes would respond with two 4-point runs of their own. Leading the charge for them once again was Robinson, who had 19 kills in the match. The Wildcats were able to keep it close due to some late set errors by Utah, but it was not enough. Despite Maldonado Diaz having 16 total kills of her own in the match, Utah would complete their sweep of Arizona.
Arizona falls to 10-3 on the season after this loss. They will be back in action this Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. MST in Corvallis, Oregon against Oregon State University.
