The Arizona Wildcats announced Friday that sophomore guard Devonaire Doutrive has been dismissed from the program due to a violation of team rules.
Arizona head coach Sean Miller released the following statement:
“Effective immediately, Devonaire Doutrive has been dismissed from our men’s basketball program for violation of team rules. He will continue to receive academic aid and support through the remainder of the current semester. We wish him well in the next steps of his academic and athletic career.”
After an up-and-down freshman season that saw him average 3.3 points and 3 rebounds per game in 11 minutes, Doutrive initially elected to transfer in the offseason before changing his mind and returning to the program. The summer saw him win the gold jersey in practice on multiple occasions, signifying the best player that week of practice, with Miller saying the sophomore might have been the team’s “most improved player” back in September.
Doutrive showed improvement immediately, leading Arizona in scoring during the annual Red/Blue Game with 15 points. He was suspended the first three games of the season for a violation of team rules, averaging 6.3 points in 17 minutes per game since the suspension ended, including a season-high 19 minutes played on Thursday night against South Dakota State.
