Arizona men’s basketball hosts San Jose State

Arizona men’s basketball will look to keep its momentum going as they host San Jose State at the McKale Center on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Arizona is coming off back-to-back games where they have scored at least 90 points and won by more than 20 in both of them. Not much should change in this game as the Spartans are 1-1 after beating Hofstra by a final score of 79-71 and then losing to Portland by 15.

SJSU went 4-27 last year but their win against Hofstra snapped a 21-game losing streak dating back to last year. In their game against Portland, they managed to only go 5-for-16 from the free-throw line and lost by double-digits.

Keep an eye on Richard Washington from the Spartans. The 6-foot-6 junior has been averaging 17 points per game and 8 rebounds to lead his team in those categories.

Ever since Sean Miller took over 10 years ago, his coaching style has never really changed. He’s always been a low scoring, defensive coach who slows the pace down. Not this year. Miller has recruited his best point guard since becoming head coach and he doesn’t want to waste time.

Anytime the ball gets into Nico Mannion’s hands, you can see him sprinting up the court to try and catch the defense off-guard. Everyone knew about Mannion’s passing ability, but what may have surprised people is his ability to score. In their last game against Illinois, Mannion led the Wildcats with 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting.

This game should get out of hand quickly, so expect to see more time from the bench. Max Hazzard, Stone Gettings, Ira Lee, Jemarl Baker Jr. and Christian Koloko should all get plenty of minutes tonight. Especially Koloko after not seeing the court against Illinois. Arizona should go up pretty quickly and never look back and they could get up to triple digits.
