Man caught in elevator in Main Library
At 4:42 p.m., Oct. 16, UAPD was dispatched to a 911 elevator maintenance call at the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd.
Upon arrival, the elevators seemed to be working properly, but the officer noticed that elevator No. 2 did not open when the buttons were pushed. The officer was informed that on the first floor, the floor beneath the main floor of the library, there was a person trapped inside the elevator. When the officer went to check for the person, he saw a man peeking through the slightly opened doors of elevator No. 2. The man claimed that he had been trapped since about 4:30 p.m. The officer stayed with the man until maintenance arrived and was able to get him through the doors at 4:50 p.m.
Woman reports break in, defecation in home
A woman reported that someone had broken into her residence on Speedway and Campbell Oct. 16. The woman told UAPD that she had left her residence on Oct. 16 to go to school. She said that when she left her room, she turned off all the lights and locked the door. When asked by the officer if she had locked the window, she stated that she did not lock her window and it was usually left open. Upon hearing this, the officer checked the window to find the screen loose.
The woman said that when she returned home that evening, she discovered her screen pulled out, her door unlocked and all the lights on. She proceeded to enter the room but found no one there. She did, however, find that someone had “”pooped”” in her toilet without flushing.
The woman said that she then flushed the toilet and continued to search for any missing or damaged property. She said that other than her window pulled back, front door unlocked, and un-flushed feces in her toilet, nothing had been damaged or taken.
Racist graffiti found on library shelf
A UA Main Library employee escorted UAPD to the 4th floor of the library on Oct. 16, where someone had used black sharpie to write the words “”DIRTY ARAB BASTARDS!!”” on the west side of the shelf. There are no witnesses.
Man returns stolen sunglasses to bookstore
A man was arrested at the corner of Second Street and Highland Avenue Oct. 16 at 2:51 p.m., on charges of shoplifting. The man had reportedly stolen a pair of $13.79 sunglasses from the UofA Bookstore.
At approximately 2:18 p.m., a UAPD officer was dispatched to the bookstore at 1209 E. University Blvd., where he was advised that the male subject was running away from security and was seen going southbound. The police officer stopped the suspect at the Highland and Second Street crosswalk.
A loss prevention officer from the bookstore said that the alleged thief had looked suspicious, so he had followed him around the store via video surveillance. The suspect took a pair of sunglasses and proceeded to walk out of the store without paying. The loss prevention officer said that the man took a left turn out of the store but was caught by UAPD on the east side of the parking garage, where he then returned the sunglasses.
“”I don’t have a pair of glasses anymore,”” the man stated. “”I’m sorry, but a $5 pair of glasses isn’t worth this trouble so I handed them back. I stole them from the bookstore, from the glass display case. Yes, I did know it was wrong. I did not have that much substantial funds to pay for them.””
