Reports: Former Notre Dame receiver will transfer to Arizona Wildcats

Former Notre Dame wide receiver Davonte Neal will transfer to the Arizona Wildcats, according to 247sports.com.

Neal, a graduate of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, reportedly wanted to transfer close to home to be with his girlfriend and daughter, who was born in early February. Last year, Neal was considering the Wildcats and Notre Dame for his college choice before settling on the Irish.

Neal is listed at 5-foot-9 and 171 pounds as a receiver, but also played running back and corner, in addition to returning kicks, in high school. He was a five-star recruit, and No. 8 overall, for ESPN in 2012. It is unclear what position head coach Rich Rodriguez will have him play for the Wildcats. Before the transfer, Arizona has one scholarship available.

“The primary reason I chose Arizona was because it was close to my family and my daughter can come see me everyday – that was the most important to me and having that family support,” Neal told 247sports.com. “The way Coach Rodriguez throws the ball around is amazing. They do it the entire game. I’ll have an opportunity to play inside and outside receiver in the offense. He does know how to get the ball in his players’ hands and from there they make plays.”

In his lone season in South Bend, Ind., Neal only had one reception for negative five yards, one carry for seven yards and 21 punt returns for 46 yards as the Fighting Irish made it all the way to the National Championship Game before losing to Alabama.

In his senior year at Chaparral, Neal had 29 total touchdowns with 551 rushing yards, 901 receiving and on defense he recorded five interceptions. He is a two-time Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year.

The Wildcats will likely pursue a waiver to allow Neal to play right away since he is moving to be closer to his girlfriend and daughter.
