Arizona baseball head coach Lopez to undergo triple bypass surgery

Before stepping behind the helm of Arizona’s baseball program for the 13th season, school officials announced Friday evening that University of Arizona head coach Andy Lopez would undergo triple bypass surgery on Monday at a local hospital.

During his tenure at the UA, the 59-year old Lopez has managed the Wildcats to the playoffs eight times and twice to the College World Series. He has amassed a 437-267-1 record in 12 seasons with Arizona.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy and his family,” athletic director Greg Byrne said in a press release. “Thankfully the medical team caught it when they did; we expect Andy to make a full recovery. This is a great reminder for all us to be mindful of our health.”

The three-time national coach of the year is currently in stable condition and is expected to return to coaching as soon as he makes a full recovery and is cleared by doctors.

Over 31 years of coaching at the Cal State-Dominguez Hills, Pepperdine and Arizona, Lopez has compiled a 1,124-665-7 record (.621).
