    Police Beat: January 28

    Let sleeping men lie

A non-UA affiliated man was arrested on charges of criminal trespass after he was found sleeping on the steps of the James E. Rogers College of Law building at 10:40 p.m. on Jan. 18.

University of Arizona Police Department officers spotted the man while they were driving westbound on Speedway Boulevard. The department had received reports about a man sleeping on the building’s stairs previously.

Upon arrival, UAPD found the man under a gray blanket and informed him that he was not allowed to sleep on the stairs. One of the officers was familiar with the suspect and checked whether he had any open exclusionary orders.

He was found to have two active warrants from the Tucson Police Department for criminal trespass. He was then escorted to the parking lot by UAPD and told he was under arrest for a violation of his exclusionary orders.

Police placed all the man’s items in the station for safekeeping and took him to Pima County Sheriff’s Department Adult Detention Center.

    A joint decision

Two UA students were diverted for minor in possession, while at Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall at midnight on Jan. 19.

A UAPD officer was doing “rounds” with a resident assistant when he noticed a smell of marijuana. The cop then asked the two students, seated on the west side of the dorm near the sidewalk,
    if they’d been smoking.

Both replied “no” and were identified by their Arizona driver’s licenses. While speaking with the suspects, the officer noted the smell disappeared but asked for permission to search both students. They responded “no” again but added a group of people had been smoking marijuana near them several minutes ago.

The two wouldn’t identify any of the group members but upon inspection of the surrounding area police found a half-smoked marijuana joint. Both students then repeated that they hadn’t smoked. UAPD officers then asked both students to empty their pockets. One of the men took an unopened bottle of alcohol out from his pocket, in addition to other items. The bottle was a gift, he said.

The student was informed he’d be referred to the Dean of Students and diverted for minor in possession.

Two non-UA affiliated persons were cited and released for violating Parking and Transportation Services policy by skateboarding and bicycling near the UA Main Library at 6:58 p.m.
    on Jan. 19.

Police responded to the library after two UAPD aides advised an officer they were speaking with two individuals regarding a violation. The two were being “belligerent,” according to the aides. The officer arrived and told the men to abide by the aides’ directions. UAPD then impounded the subjects’ bike and skateboard for failing to follow the aides’ verbal warning.
