Hundreds of students from Tucson and Phoenix high schools will discover the fun and feasibility of becoming engineers at the Advancement of Latinos in Engineering/Young Latina Forum on Thursday, Feb. 12, on the University of Arizona campus.
This year’s challenge: Build solar cars that can escape a pack of zombie toy soldiers in the apocalyptic future (batteries included in case of apocalyptic rain). In teams of six, the students will design, test and build their mini solar cars. Then they will present their survival vehicles to a panel of University of Arizona/Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or SHPE, volunteer judges for prizes.
Presented by SHPE and sponsored by IBM and Raytheon, the annual program features interactive workshops designed to encourage Hispanic youths to consider engineering careers.
