The Arizona men’s basketball team has made its first offseason move in the pickup of Cochise College transfer Matt Korcheck.
The 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward is expected to redshirt the 2012-2013 season, but will look to be a major part of the UA lineup during the 2013-14 season, according to Cochise coach Jerry Carrillo.
“Thank you everyone for the welcoming into the UofA family, I look forward to working hard and helping out this team as much as I can!!” Korcheck tweeted on Monday. Korcheck’s Twitter page was filled with responses congratulating him on joining the Arizona program.
Korcheck, a Tucson native and Sabino High School product, would take the Wildcats’ last scholarship for the 2012-13 season, but the circumstances surrounding Josiah Turner are still not clear. Turner remains indefinitely suspended from the team, and if he departs, another scholarship would open.
Korcheck, who averaged 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Cochise Apaches last season, chose the Wildcats over Oklahoma.
